Dilip Prabhavalkar, won the award for best supporting actor award for Marathi film 'Shevri' and Lage raho munna bhai. He had played a benign middle class clerk in Shevri and the award was given to him for portraying two diverse and equally challenging characters.

Prabhavalkar said his supporting act in the Marathi film "Shevri" was a unique role and was happy that it had been recognised.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Divorce is a social issue and hence dealt with more frequently in films these days, said Neena Kulkarni, noted actor and producer of the Marathi film Shevri.

She was speaking at a Face-to-face programme organized by the Thiruvananthapuram Press Club on Thursday.

Her debut production, Shevri, which in English means a wisp of cotton, is about a working woman who shares a rented flat in Mumbai.

"The film focuses on a single night the protagonist is forced to spend on the streets. As she wanders the deserted roads, she recalls her relationships, her estranged husband, teenaged son staying with her mother, her boss, her colleague and her roommate," said Ms. Kulkarni, who has over two-and-a-half decades of experience in theatre, films and television.

The film concludes with a visibly confident protagonist coming to terms with her lot.

The film is directed by Gajendra Ahire, a new generation filmmaker with 11 films in Marathi to his credit. His debut movie Not only Mrs Raut won him the national award for direction.

Some of his films like Saiil, Paandhar and Vithal Vithal have been chosen for various film festivals in India and abroad.

His recent film Sari var Sari was screened at the Asian International Film Festival in 2005.

The face-to face programme was also attended by filmmakers Joshi Joseph, Jasimine Dullal and Lal Jose.

`Marathi Cinema Set To Undergo A Revolution'

Shevri by director Gajendra Ahire and actor/producer Neena Kulkarni won the Government of Maharashtra's Sant Tukaram award for the Best International Marathi Film at the closing ceremony of the Pune International Film Festival 2007 on (22nd Mar)Thursday evening.

Shevri, which portrays a night in the life of an urban woman on the streets of Mumbai, won the award for the innovative and intelligent cinema techniques and the remarkable performances of the characters."For its innovative & intelligent cinematic narration by effective use of flashbacks."

K.C. George, chairman of the jury for Marathi film competition, said, "Marathi films are seeing a variety of subjects, genres and experiments. We feel that Marathi cinema is going to undergo a revolution in the near future.

Mita Vashisht who essays the role of Vidya's room mate Maya, needs no introduction.She has worked in off-beat cinema as well as commercial films.
Apart from acting, Mita is also actively involved in social work. She has worked with children in remand homes and started a theatre group with them.
Her film 'Summer Moon' a 40 min. insight into her work with these girls is a highlight in her career.
In 'Shevri', Mita plays a non-conformist , intelligent woman. Her role is important in the film because it is an anti-thesis of Vidya Barve's character.

Wednesday evening saw the Marathi Film Industry gather under one roof at the Ravindar Natya Mandir. The occasion, the screening of Neena Kulkarni's film 'Shevri', was a do well attended.While Neena played the perfect host, it was Vijaya Mehta and Kishori Amonkar who garnered maximum attention. Also seen was Shivaji Satam who made it a point to catch up with Vijaya. One heard an excited Neena say, "I'm very happy with the response that today's screening has generated; it's even better than the one we got in Pune."

Like a wisp of Cotton blown in different directions the one and a half hr. long marathi movie 'Shevri' tackles the plight of a woman. who is forced to come to terms with her life after a painful divorce. Neena Kulkarni's excitment is quite evident as she doles out information about 'Shevri' through which she takes a plunge into production. "The movie does not deal with any specific social issue. It's a movie that does not preach it makes the audience 'feel'. My movie presents incidents and leaves it to the viewers to react." says Kulkarni.
But ask her how this transition from being in front of the camera to behind the camera is? "Well my daughter Soha and I handled the production our selves. We did not hire a production manager.I feel when you get into something for the first time, you should get the experience yourself. We wanted to learn the ropes from the start." adds the confident Kulkarni.
Soha a student of J.J. Institute, has done the costumes for 'Shevri'.
From playing the doting mother on silver screen and now donning the hat of a producer, actress Neena Kulkarni has come a long way.
